Sharon and Paul wanted to transform the rear of their Victorian home. They wanted a bright, contemporary space, but they were worried about losing its original charm and character in the process. They approached us to help strike the perfect balance, a modern design in a traditional house. It was essential that the new space felt cohesive with the rest of the house.
HOVER OVER & SEE THE CHANGE
HOVER OVER & SEE THE CHANGE
We started by carefully listening to their concerns and aspirations. We guided them with ideas and mood boards to show how we could seamlessly integrate a modern design in a traditional house like their Victorian home. From there, we created detailed furniture layout plans, complete with furnishing suggestions that tied the old and new together. Every element was designed to maximise light and space while preserving the home’s unique identity.
The house is filled with artwork, natural wood, and warm metal tones to create harmony with the bright and open backdrop.
The staircase spans three floors, so we knew the stained wood bannisters had to be bold and dramatic, creating a striking backbone for the entire home. The deep tones perfectly complement the Crittall windows and doors downstairs, tying the space together with effortless sophistication.
The result is a stunning transformation. A truly modern design in a traditional house.
Sharon and Paul’s home is now a real showstopper, blending the elegance of its Victorian roots with the sleek, airy feel of modernity. The new layout not only brings in light and openness but also creates a functional, welcoming space that they and their family can enjoy for years to come.

“As much as we wanted to maximise natural light, we weren’t sure how the planned contemporary space at the back would fit with the period feel at the front.
In addition to offering some layout ideas we hadn’t considered before, Kate listened to what we wanted to achieve and advised what style of windows and doors would complement the original windows. As well as getting our style, she challenged us to think a little further about our design.
Throughout the project, Kate was responsive and flexible, bringing a kitchen designer and carpenter on board and working with our builder. It was wonderful to have Kate on hand to help me choose the right pieces for my spaces. It feels so ‘us’ in our house now. In addition to working brilliantly, it looks great as well!”
